The Opening Weekend Record That Stunned Europe

In October 2012, J.A. Bayona's sophomore feature, Lo Imposible (produced by Apaches Entertainment and Telecinco Cinema), debuted across 638 screens in Spain. Over its first four days, the film generated an astounding €8,971,889 with 1.22 million admissions, marking the single largest opening weekend in Spanish cinema history.

Starring Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor, and introducing Tom Holland in his breakout cinematic role, the film recounted the true story of the Belón family during the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. Bayona crafted the film with predominantly Spanish technical crews, using water tanks in Alicante's Ciudad de la Luz studios to execute practical water sequences of staggering realism.

Global Crossover & Oscar Recognition

While domestic revenues surged past €42.4 million, The Impossible commanded international distribution across 60+ territories. Naomi Watts earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress in a Leading Role, while the production swept 5 Goya Awards, including Best Director for J.A. Bayona and Best Special Effects for Félix Bergés and Pau Costa.

The film’s global box office tally finished at $180,279,000, illustrating that Spanish studios could finance, produce, and direct high-budget spectacle that competes head-to-head with major Hollywood studio tentpoles.
